How to Crack CLAT: A 6-Month Plan From a Cold Start
Quick answer

Six months is enough for CLAT from a cold start, and the plan is unusually simple because the exam is one skill in five costumes: reading fast with retention. Months 1โ€“2 build the reading habit and section fundamentals, months 3โ€“4 add sectional drilling and daily current affairs, months 5โ€“6 are mocks and analysis. The candidates who clear are not the ones who read more books โ€” they are the ones who sat 15+ full-length mocks and reviewed every one.

CLAT does not reward content accumulation. Roughly 120 comprehension-based questions in two hours reward one thing, and every part of the plan below serves it.

The six-month plan #

MonthFocusDaily
1Reading habit begins (2 long articles/day); English + Logical Reasoning basics2โ€“3 hrs
2Legal Reasoning: principle-application drills; start current-affairs notes3 hrs
3Sectional tests; Quant fundamentals (Class 10 level); GK monthly compilations3โ€“4 hrs
4Sectional tests at speed; past papers tagged by section4 hrs
5Full-length mocks twice a week + analysis; revise current affairs4โ€“5 hrs
6Mocks every 3 days; final GK revision; answer-key drill4โ€“5 hrs

The four habits that actually decide it #

Step 1: Two long-form articles a day, without exception #

Editorials and long non-fiction. This is not "extra reading" โ€” it is the core training for four of the five sections.

Step 2: One page of current affairs notes a week #

Five stories, two lines of context each. A page a week is 24 pages by exam day, which is revisable. A thick GK book is not.

Drill the discipline of applying the stated principle even when it contradicts what you believe the law is. This is the most trainable section in the paper.

Step 4: 15+ full-length mocks, each fully reviewed #

Classify every error: concept, misread, time, or careless. Only the first sends you back to study. This is where scores move in months five and six.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips
  • Do not build a Quant fortress. It is around a tenth of the paper. Class 10 fundamentals plus passage practice is enough.
  • Take mocks at 2 p.m. on Sundays if that is the exam slot. Alertness is trainable and slot-specific.
  • Accuracy over attempts. Negative marking means the last ten guesses often cost more than they earn.
  • Six months at three to four focused hours beats twelve months at one distracted hour. Consistency is the variable, not duration.

Ishita B. ยท NLU Jodhpur, 2026โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Two editorials a day from month one. By the mocks I was finishing the English section with time left, which is where the whole paper is won.

Vikram T. ยท RGNUL, 2026โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

I over-prepared GK from a fat book and under-prepared mocks. Fixed it in the last eight weeks with 14 mocks and the score jumped.

How to crack CLAT โ€” frequently asked questions

How do I crack CLAT in 6 months?
Build the reading habit and section fundamentals in months one and two, drill sectionals and current affairs in months three and four, and spend months five and six on full-length mocks with full reviews. Three to four focused hours a day is the working figure.
Can I crack CLAT on the first attempt?
Yes, and most admitted candidates do. The common pattern among them is a daily reading habit sustained for months and fifteen or more analysed full-length mocks.
How many hours a day should I study for CLAT?
Three to four focused hours through most of the preparation, rising to four to five in the final two months when mocks and their analysis take longer.
What is the most important section in CLAT?
All five are comprehension-based, so reading speed with retention is the shared skill. In weight terms, Current Affairs with GK and Legal Reasoning are the largest blocks.
Is coaching necessary to crack CLAT?
No, but a proctored mock series with All-India ranking effectively is. Coaching adds structure, doubt resolution and interview-stage support, which some candidates need and others do not.
