IPMAT is tough in a narrow way: the syllabus is only Class 11–12 level, but roughly 30,000 candidates compete for about 300 seats, and IIM Indore's short-answer Quant section gives you no options to work backwards from. The concepts are not hard. The accuracy, speed and selection ratio are. Most candidates who clear it have taken 8–12 full-length mocks and closed arithmetic and algebra completely.
"Tough" gets used for two different things — difficult content and difficult odds. IPMAT is mostly the second.

What makes it easier than it looks #
The syllabus is finite and shallow. Unlike CAT, there is no Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning block at Indore, no graduate-level material, and the tested chapters are predictable from past papers. A Class 12 student with solid arithmetic starts much closer to the line than the applicant numbers suggest.
- The single biggest score lever is accuracy on arithmetic, not covering more chapters.
- Practise the short-answer format deliberately. Students used to MCQs lose marks purely to format, not to knowledge.
- Percentile, not raw score, is what moves. In a hard year everyone's raw score falls together.
