IPMAT and CAT are not alternatives — they are different entry points. IPMAT is taken after Class 12 for a five-year integrated BBA+MBA at IIM Indore or Rohtak; CAT is taken after graduation for the two-year MBA at all IIMs. CAT is the harder exam and opens far more institutes; IPMAT gets you inside an IIM five years earlier. If you are in Class 12, the real question is whether you want to commit now or keep options open.

Which is actually tougher #
CAT, on almost any measure: the DILR section has no IPMAT equivalent, the candidate pool is ten times larger and the percentile bar at top IIMs is brutal. But IPMAT has a difficulty of its own — Indore's short-answer Quant section with negative marking and no options is a format most school students have never faced.
- IPMAT does not close the CAT door. If IPMAT does not work out, you do a regular degree and write CAT in your final year like everyone else.
- The five-year commitment is the real cost. You choose management at 18, and exiting after three years does not give you a conventional standalone degree path at every institute.
- Quant preparation transfers between the two almost completely, so IPMAT prep is never wasted.
Who each route suits #
IPMAT suits you if you are sure about management, you want the IIM brand early, and you can prepare seriously alongside Class 12.
CAT suits you if you would rather do a degree you enjoy first, you want the full spread of IIMs and top B-schools, or you want work experience before an MBA — which most CAT admits at top IIMs now have.
